MUES Seminar : What is Modern Monetary Theory Really?

The inaugural MUES Seminar was conducted by Ray Newland (Economics Student at Macquarie) where he spoke on the topic of Modern Monetary Theory (MMT). The seminar discussed the theory behind MMT as well as its implications for inequality, climate change, the housing market and the broader economy in general. The evening was punctuated by two discussion periods, where attendees were given the opportunity to discuss their thoughts with each other or ask the speaker any questions.

Meet the Experts : MUES x Applied Finance Society

During the Meet the Experts event we had the privilege of hearing Stephen Halmarick (Chief Economist at CBA), Su-Lin Ong (Chief Economist at RBC - Capital Markets), and Johnathan McMenamin (Senior Economist at Barrenjoey) speak on the topic of macroeconomics and policy applications. The panel, chaired by Dr Lurion De Mello (SFHEA), discussed the current economic landscape and provided us with expert opinion on the topics of housing, labour, and climate change.

In the second part of the evening, our attention shifted to the finance panel chaired by Keith Woodward. Discussing economic data and industry decision making, Carlos Nochez (Senior Portfolio Analyst at Apex Group), Michael Garcia, PhD (Senior Analyst at the RBA), and Vinayak Muralidharan, CFA (Senior Investment Analyst at Antipodes Partners) clarified the role of economic data in decision making and spoke about the challenges of grappling with vast datasets and insights

Commerce x Economics Panel

Our panel discussion included Dr. David Orsmond (Department of Economics) Carmel Emanuel (Department of Accounting & Corporate Governance), Ray Newland (Executive of MUES), and Laura Fleming (President of MUBS). The speakers discussed their respective fields, the importance of them going forward, and how each intertwine with one another. More specifically, they discussed how each discipline is pivotal in ensuring the smooth functioning of a business or government.

Contemporary issues such as the impact of the GFC on economic management, ethical standards of companies, the importance of transparency, alongside how the rise of technology will impact the future employability of students, were all discussed.

Federal Treasury Event

The MUES Treasury Event featured a talk from Nick West, speaking about his experience in the graduate program and how his role as an economist has evolved. He spoke highly of the department’s culture of challenging each other’s ideas and models, work-life balance, the diversity of work you can do, and the skills-progression you are offered.

Thank you again to Nick West and the Australian Treasury for taking the time to present to us.
